Tell us about yourself, who are you, where do you live, what makes you who you are.

Hi, I’m Taleah and I run T-Leaf Collections. I live in Brisbane (my husband and I have recently purchased our first home and are due for our first baby in April) and currently work full-time for a big mining giant in Human Resources. I’m a small-town girl at heart, growing up in Central Queensland in a small place called Biloela. Since then I’ve travelled numerous times to Europe (that travel bug sure gets you!!) and in 2010 moved over to Paris for 1.5 years to complete my Masters in HR. While I was there, I met my wonderful French husband, Philippe, who I have dragged back to Australia (although there wasn’t much kicking and screaming luckily). I love to grab as many opportunities as I can, eat good food, drink good wine and travel often! Yep – I think that sums me up.

What kind of business do you run?

I own an online homewares store called T-Leaf Collections, that sells a unique product that was designed and dreamt up by me called ‘Memory Drops’. Memory Drops are a really unique way to hang your memories in your home.

How did this business come about, what inspired you?

My online boutique was brought to life in November 2014, originally sourcing handmade homewares from talented creatives from all over the globe. At the end of 2015 I was inspired to create my own high-quality products. So I expanded our brand with the launch of our very own range of Memory Drops that are designed and made by us right here in sunny Brisbane, Australia.

My unique Memory Drop idea came to me after I landed back in Australia after a trip to Europe, where my husband and I got married in France and enjoyed our honeymoon. It was just the trip I needed to inspire me and to keep pushing my business to new levels. In such a saturated online homewares market it is so important to be original and to give you something new, unique and also practical. So…after much design and discussion, my Memory Drops were born!

Is running your own business as you expected it to be? What is the best thing about it? What is most challenging?

I don’t think I really went into it knowing what to expect. I just had an idea and thought I’d go for it! I started off really small with only a few products for sale and over time the business has evolved and changed into something really special. The best thing about running my own business is being able to have a creative outlet outside of the corporate world. It also makes me strive for the goal of working for myself one day. Hopefully one day soon!

The most challenging thing for me at the moment is trying to work out ‘what next’. As a small business owner you have so many hats on, you do the finance, you do the marketing, you do the designing etc. etc. so for me at the moment it’s working out what I need to outsource to keep my business growing.

Do you have any tips for others who want to go down this path of running their own business?

Go for it!! Don’t over think things or complicate things too much or you just won’t get started. Just make a start. “Start Small, Dream Big.”

Do you have a random fact, a funny story, an embarrassing moment that you can share with us?

Umm…about as random as I get is, I don’t have my ears pierced and I turn 31 this year! Maybe I’ll put that on my bucket list! I must’ve missed that craze in high school, not sure what happened there!
